Mk4 golf is different again. Mk3 has the same block bolt holes as a jx. Why this is?.. Don't know, but it's helpful for anyone putting a tdi or gti engine in our vans. I'm not saying the sharan uses the same bolt holes, but the bolt holes you want are there.
I am right on this btw... I have had a golf and a A4 engine in my van.. And know people with sharan engines fitted

Absolutely no problem, I don't doubt your knowledge for a second and in fact I throw myself upon your mercy for your assistance with this. It's most appreciated!

I just want to get things 100% straight before I go and spunk a load of money on an engine and gearbox (and turbo and loom and....).

I probably can't get over to see the engine until tuesday but I need to confirm with the yard tomorrow (monday) that I definitely want it.

Thank you for your help :D

Just to clarify... the jx might well be installed in a T3 inline, but it was sourced from the transverse engined Golf and was the only design VW had to use, so they adapted it to fit the Transporter.
Thats why everything up to a Mk3 will fit.
Inline sourced engines dont fit because they are machined to suit the installation optimised for a fwd or quattro transaxle.

That makes sense, I think I was thinking about it the wrong way round, i.e. the JX (made for and) fitted to the T3 first, then used in other vehicles.

Was the AFN ever fitted to a MK3 golf? I presume the AFN is actually a close relative of the JX, just with a different head/pump arrangement, direct injection as opposed to (I was told) pre-injection in the JX?

Cheers for clearing that up.

Dave.

The golf did come with a AFN, but I've never seen one in the uk. In Europe there is a few.
