fan or switch ? how do I check...

Post by boardmonkey »

Hi,

I have purchased a multimeter and following a few youtube vids on how to use it. I hate electrics & have never touched them in home or in the van.
Checked my fuses for continuity and found one 20AMP blown. Funnily it was the blower

So I thought hey I change that, which I did - continuity restored, fan still doesnt work. bugga. Assume Motor is seized ?

1) So do I check the switch, if so how do you check it ? I mean where do I stick my probes :D
2) Or do I assume the motor is ******* and have to get the bloody dash out..

Cheers, Richard

Have you tried putting the fan on maximum speed? Sometimes they get a resistor fail on speed 1.

get a 6" piece of wire, strip ends of insulation and twist up . If youre feeling flush crimp a male spade terminal on each end.

take heater control switched and facia off and pop heater control switch out of dashboard. (if youve got hands like a girl, pull the heater plug off the back of the switch)

either way, you want the round plug exposed that the heater switch goes into. unplug the heater switch.

Get your little wire cable youve made and stick one end in the feamle spade that had the red/black going to it.Check fuse is good. Turn ignition on/live.

The other end (sorry cant remember colours yellow/yellow/black/white maybe?) stick it in ALL THREE female termials, obviously one at a time.

If the fan fires up on all three speeds, its the switch.

If it fires on one or two speeds, its the resistor pack.

If it does nothing its either resistor pack or more than likely , seized fan.

Just for piece of mind make sure you are getting 12v at the switch before you start major surgery to the dash.
If you pull the heater box to bits, do the resistor same time as fan. :ok

Bummer.

Tried the wire trick, nothing, nada, zilch, the wire got warm, fuse didnt blow - still have continuity there...

"Just for piece of mind make sure you are getting 12v at the switch before you start major surgery to the dash " - how do I do this ?

Ignition on and multimeter into black/red.

Saying that if wires are getting warm I would say it's a seized fan chap :( :ok

Yep, plenty of juice to the switch...

ordered a new fan, resistors...anything else worth doing, replacing as I do not want to do this job again... :(

Neoprene ? Isn't that the stuff wetsuits are made of? ? Think the missus might get the hump if I cut a 12" flap out of hers :rofl
