Water pooling..

I get water collecting in here, where the air ducting comes through and into the door ducts. This has happened forever in my ownership, and ive just had the screen out and welded up nicely. Ive seen pictures of that repair mid process and it looks good. SO... for arguments sake, assuming the screen is water tight, what else can drain into this? it seems to be a box section, and feels closed from above. Obviously not though!

aerial? washer jets and wiper spindles?

On a related note, heres a pic of my aerial. Is this any kind of standard vw, or something else? the rubber grommets are crumbly.. (please ignore the horror film streaks)

so i took the opportunity of the rainy night to try and catch it in the act.

so ive found its not the aerial, as i can see that with the torch from the inside. Its not the washer jets, for the same reason. Ive seen the drips coming down after much contorting, and it comes from a factory cut hole in the corner of the windscreen where the dash meets the chassis, about 1.5cm diameter, one in each corner. its how the water's getting there exactly is still a mystery. the new screen seal from vw emporium looks good and snug with a good dose of sealant all around. i took the dash tidy out and spied through the ashtray but that didnt tell me much. ill take the binnacle off soon and see if i can get any better clues using a small mirror and torch. it has some pop studs from some kind of brush guard from its Australian days all around the wind screen and grill (can see them in the second picture), which might not help things. so the chase is ON.

Are those pop buttons all along the outside? Wouldn't imagine that those are meant to be there from the factory and would easily leak? Mine leaked but it was the screen seal as is normally the case

Solved. . after only 4 years

Tiny ingress near the top of the windscreen seal where it meets the fibreglass top. Little dab of mastic pushed in as a longshot!
Onto the next van problem.

Its a good job we like them isn't it...

All windscreen leaks emanate from the top. Chances are your bottom corners are rotting out under the rubber - lift a bit to see.. You may stop the top leak but rust monster will already be at work. Do investigate now. You may have found the source but not seen the real damage.

Any leak via the windscreen (however small) is indicative of bigger problems that may not have shown themselves externally yet - but they will.

its just had the windscreen out during 3 weeks of body work and that was all fixed up, so im clear on that now. its just nice to have found the source after all this time there's a tough spot where my roof (its a very uncommon roof in the uk) meets the seal, creating a hard bit to make tight. its not ideal and obviously hadnt been resealed the second time either.

New seal? If not it never sits quite right afterwards. A thin bead of roofing mastic run under the lip all the way around will ensure water doesn't get in. I do the same even on new seals - to make absoluterly sure it won't leak.

Yeah a new seal, the proper one after all the guidance on here about seals, you'd be a fool to go against the grain
