Confrimation of Windscreen Rust

Strangely we havent had any rain in north wales for a while now but when i got in my van this morning after a good soaking last night i noticed the tell tale sign of .... leaky window



Im assuming it has leaked through here...



And down here ...



And to add a little more evidence...



So im 99% sure i have some rust in the classic place but if one of you guys could confirm that it would be great

Luckily I have a windscreen laying in the back of my van. The current one is pretty chipped and ive been waiting for the time to change them over. So hopefully will kill 2 birds with one stone (i think the stone was the initial problem )

Yes you do. Look at the way the windscreen seal has expanded due to the rot in the corner in your last pic.

Yes it looks like it. No point messing around with it if so. Take out the screen, cut out the rust. Its a pain I know. As a matter of interest lift the floor mat to see has the water done damage there.

Personally I'd leave this job until the warmer months. If you've read my WIKI on this, you'll understand that the vast majority of water that pools in this area comes from the very top of the screen where seal meets bodywork.

The seal effectively acts like a straw through capillary action, drawing rain or overnight condensation in, after which it descends under the seal to the bottom corners.

Pick up some roofing mastic in a gun-type tube (think they do black or grey in B&Q and its cheap). Pick a dry day ( wishful thinking) and lifting the seal, squeeze a thin bead of sealant around the outer edge of seal so you get just enough underneath to keep the water out over winter. This is NOT a permanent fix and the rusting will continue but it should stem the persistent drips until better weather when you'll feel more inclined to tackle the job. Excess sealant cleans off no prob with white spirit. Do not use aquatic sealant - it won't work.

When you come to repair, you'll be fitting a new seal anyway. Not the JK ones though.

They do if you attempt to take screen and rubber out as a unit. Personally I don't bother and just run a cutting knife around the rubber so theres nothing actually holding screen in, and carefully lift the glass off. The old seal will be distorted, old and won't be much use again. Hence better to cut it away and fit a new seal. If its a good quality one, it'll go in easy. Cheap copy - good chance cracking screen putting it back too.

Seems obvious but you'll need to treat any rust on top edge of dash and paint accordingly. Some say the seal will be enough to keep out the elements. I don't and use a small bead of mastic on the refit so the job doesn't need a revisit but I allow a week for rubber to settle before applying it. Up to you on that but just passing on my own experience.

Mines leaking in the same place.
Have put off doing it though as i've no undercover space to work in at the moment and don't want to risk running out of dry weather to complete it in one day.

They can be a bit messy to fit as they have to be let in, also see schofields and jk to name a few,,don't forget postage as that can add up

Unless the lot has gone, its simpler to patchwork what has rotted and linish smooth.
