I've just noticed that the wiki's now got a pinout diagram for the early dash connector, courtesy of MidLifeCrisis. No sign of the tacho feed unfortunately. I'll start in the engine bay and see where coil pin 1 goes.

Could you please put up a link for he tachometer? Lord knows what the accuracy will be but it's worth a punt as I really fancy having one. Thanks.
Why would the glass be anything other than half full?

Here you go : DEOK 0.36" LED Digital Tachometer

Stated accuracy looks good:
- Measuring range :60-9999 r
- Time of resetting to zero: 3 seconds.
- Refresh rate: about 4Hz
- Measurement accuracy:5000 rpm or less: about 2 rpm;5000 rpm or more: about 3 rpm

Ta very much. Just need to choose weather I have it illuminated at night or not. Probably going to be super bright which will annoy the pants off me. At least with the dash, thee is the ability to dim it which I prefer. How are you getting with your 'early' wiring, much to do before you have a functioning meter?

There's no separate green wire from the coil that I can see - there is one green wire, but I haven't traced where it goes. I think it'll be easiest to just run another wire - the coil terminal has a spare slot for another spade connector. I've got a spare wire that runs from my dash to the back of the van (for an unused warning lamp) so I'm going to extend that as necessary to reach the coil. Then I'll just need power to the meter. I agree - it'll probably be too bright for night time use - it's a pity those LEDs won't dim.

Back to the drawing board on this one unfortunately. The gauge arrived this morning, but it's about 1-2mm too small in both dimensions, so it just drops through the hole. I could probably find a way to glue it in place, but I'm not going to bother as the one I received is faulty - one segment of every digit is missing, and it doesn't respond to the coil signal wire. Good news in a way, as I can now get a refund.

That's put a halt to both our little projects then, I was discussing this today and was hoping to get on with. Any alternatives?

I did wonder about this bit on the eBay page;

Input signal: a voltage pulse signal, active shock signal, PNP or NPN proximity switch signal, Hall
proximity switch signal. Voltage range is 0-5V.

Does that mean that the signal from the coil needs stepping down to 5V ?

No idea I'm afraid. I'm a bit out of my depth here, and was just hoping that the gauge would work like other tachos. I'm not yet convinced it won't, as I suspect whatever is causing the faulty display might also mean my gauge isn't working at all - it's the same missing segment in each digit, so maybe it's a fault code or at least an indication of some higher problem rather than just random failure of the digits.
