unwanted water feature in my van when it rains!

Post by Wedgiebaby »

Hi guys,
My van (Wedgie) has sprung a leak :( When it rains, we find a small puddle of water on the front passenger floor mat, and also on the floor underneath the mat. There's some surface rust on the floor, so it's obviously been like it a while.
There's a tiny rust patch around the windscreen rubber on the outside and also a gap in the seam along the front of the van on that side too, so we wondered if it might be one of those areas that was letting water in. Just wondering if there might be a usual/well known problem spot with these vans that could be causing this?
Hubby asked a guy at work who used to have a T25 and he laughed and said we should be happy it's just one leak as his one was like a sieve
Any suggestions/ideas would be appreciated.

Should explain it all for you. Just bear in mind there will be more rust than you can actually see.

I think the small bit of rust around the windscreen is likely to be the culprit. If you can see it beyond the window rubber then it is likely to be fairly extensive underneath, and will need sorting fairly soon as it can progress quite rapidly :(

Thanks guys, you are all so helpful :)
Wedgie is going to Matt at Auto impressions this week, to get her remaining (and hopefully last - for a little while at least) mechanical issues sorted. She's already had a service and some hoses, filters etc changed, but needs a few other bits done, that we were advised to have done by a VW specialist. She will also have a tune up and I've asked for any other bits to be sorted while she's there, then she is going back to my local mechanic who specialises in bodywork. He's had a good look over her and has quoted me £700 to get all her minor rusty bits repaired. Generally, she's a very solid old gal, very clean underneath and in good nick for an old lady. Despite a bit of filler here and there, her bodywork looks great, but on closer inspection she has a few little bits here and there that I want to nip in the bud and keep on top of. I pointed the small rust spot around windscreen area out to Phil, and he will deal with that when he has her in to sort her out. Hopefully then, that should rid her of the indoor pools in wet weather! :) Once he has dealt with the rusty bits, I will put a good coat of Collinite on her to help her through the winter, especially as she will be living outdoors until we move (hopefully soon) back to Kent. We will get there, she's worth it! :ok
PS. will post a pic of the rust around the windscreen rubber seal on Thursday M.M, as Wedgie is currently parked at my friend's place. Only have space for 2 cars and until she is properly sorted and ready to roll, I am still using my Renault. in the meantime, I will post a couple taken recently after she had a thorough wash and clean up that took me all weekend. Looked and smelt so much better though, so was worth the effort.

Here u go. Will re-paint the top once the fibreglass repair is done as it looks a bit manky as is. Obviously been washed over with a beige paint at some point, but its very streaky.
I've noticed everyone seems to block out reggie no's in van piccis, so have followed suit. Guess its probably just a security thing? .........

Quick update.........
Wedgie went to Matt's (Auto Impressions) garage in Reading today for a few mechanical tinkerings. While she was there having her mechanics sorted, Hubby asked Matt his opinion ref. the puddle of water and he has also said that he is fairly sure it originates from the tiny hole around the windscreen rubber.
So, once the bodywork has been sorted, then hopefully there will be no more puddles!
Thanks again for your input, it's much appreciated. :ok

Piccie of the small rust patch under the windscreen rubber as promised. It's very small, could it really be the cause of the puddle on the mat inside? She will be going in to the garage the week after next to get all the rusty bits sorted, so if this is the place the water is getting in, it will be sorted soon.

The cause could be anywhere underneath the seal - that is just the lowest point where the water sits and causes the rust to start.

Is it also worth checking the seals on the wiper spindles?

If you take the windscreen out I'd bet money on there being a larger hole way under the seal. Impossible to get to it without removing the windscreen.
