He already has one - he is after putting a 1.6 diesel in, trouble is he has a van that has gone from an Aircooled lump to the 1.6 subaru.

I don't know why - maybe the current engine is dead. I don't know what the situation is like in Iran for various engines as it is difficult to find any data on European vehicles that were imported there. He can't even use eBay there. My knowledge dates back to the 70's when a girl I knew lived in Tehran.

Thanks friends ...

Unfortunately, parts of old cars, "Iran" is hardly to be found
Here, the Problems is the use of old cars
In Iran, the vehicles older than 25 years, "old" refers to!

Appears, install the 5 speed gearbox is difficult;
Once the issue is resolved;

I think you need to know what you want to achieve by going 5 speed?

Why do you want to go 5 speed?

Can you find any T3 gearboxes there??

If your van was originally a 1.6 Aircooled, then the gearing is quite low.. 60mph at 4000 rpm.. probably suits the 1.6 Subaru quite well as it wont be very powerful..

If going diesel.. then if a non turbo, you wont want much taller gearing either.. it wont have enough power..

If you go for any gearbox from a watercooled van, then the gear linkage is different so you need that too.. and the front gearbox mount will be different also..

I use the 5 speed gearbox, the use of higher speed and fuel consumption is also reduced;
5 speed gearbox is hardly to be found here ...
Also, my van has a Subaru engine;(of course I'm going to replace it with a 1.6 liter diesel)

If the diesel engine you fit has enough power then you can gear up easier by fitting a taller tyre... standard are 185r14, use a 195r14 or a 205r14 to increase the gearing... IF you have the power to pull it... (needs to be a 70bhp+ engine for that..)

Again.. as others have said.. the 5 speed box doesn't necessarily mean better speed and fuel.. and if it does have taller gearing.. you need the power to be able to turn it....

I'd get the engine installed before worrying about the gearbox.. seems on the other thread that might be more of an issue... Good luck

both.. 4 and 5 speed..
My caravelle from 1983 is 5..
My panel van from 1988 is 4..

The Double cab.. (Syncro) is of course 5, but that's not a concern for you...
