Transmission installation "Five Gear" Golf and the Audi 100

Post by ali 254 »

hi..

My car is a 4-speed gearbox(vw t3 model 1981)
I'm going to upgrade to a 5 speed gearbox
Can golf gearbox (Generation One and Two) and the "Audi 100" use?

thanks...

Many on here do not think that a five speed gearbox is an upgrade, this is because first gear in a five speed gearbox is very short. You would also need a new gear leaver and all the connecting rods and bushes I think.

Technically, it is possible to install?
It is matched with gearbox for golf?

The gearbox on audi/golf come from a front engined car.the t3/t25 is a rear engined car.and as was pointed out to me recently. You would end up with a lot of reverse gears.

but with some mods there is gearbox's you could use
you don't say what engine you have

you could use passat/audi a4 box flipped upside down
you could use ren.ault un1 gearbox with flipped diff
from r21 r25 alpine
or if you have very full pockets boxter

Golf and T4 gearboxes can't be used in a T3 because as well as being front wheel drive the engine is mounted sideways in those vehicles, so the gearbox is totally wrong.

Yes, but the 5 speed T3 gearbox is unusual, in that it has 1 extra low gear, rather than an extra cruising gear. Not really an upgrade in my opinion :)

but a rebuilt 5 speed with 4.14 final drive and longer fifth gear if required depending on power, weight, size and use does work very well and is a better long term bet than any other fudge with a flipped box out of something else -
there's been a few who went flipped passat box and then have gone back to the T3 5 speed, it's not a massive price difference and you are then starting with a fully rebuilt box that if looked after and regularly oil changed will outlive the shell of the van and which won't run your cv joint's at max all the time or scrape the ground when going over speed bumps

But Ali is thinking of putting in a 1.6 diesel, I wouldn't go putting a 4.14 final drive in just yet :)

I'd love one for my TDI install though - just saving up the £££'s :)
