Engine bay seal

Post by goody33 »

Just had the heads reconditioned on my vans 2.0cu engine, which required the engine to be dropped.
Had the van back from the garage and the engine bay seal has not been put back correctly and is damaged in areas.
Is the seal something that can be replaced with the engine in or is it a engine out job?

Do you mean the seal that the lid fits into?
Why would the glass be anything other than half full?

I presumed he meant the tinware seal as he says about taking the engine out.

Try this:

https://club8090.co.uk/wiki/Al ... e_bay_seal" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Worked for me and much cheaper than a vw one

Easy to install with the engine in place too, start with one end above the gearbox and just work your way round, it's dead easy. You really do need 4 meters of the stuff!

I was looking at that seal earlier after finding an old thread on VZI about the engine bay seal.
Thanks for finding that for me.

I'd forgotten that page. Have updated the link to new sealsdirect page as it changed in the meantime. Currently works out about £21 (Part: ETS1395) - or you can pay £90 (part J10740) at JK.

£33.68 with vat and postage from Seals Direct. That's half the price of the cheapest seal I could find that was in stock.
Cool Air was £65 inc P+P. I did find one from Megabug for £50, but they didn't have any in stock.

Yep, 'genuine' or copy seals vary in price right up to the £100+ mark. There can't be that many folk that are purist enough to really want to fit an original seal - not if this one does exactly the same job. Not everyone wants to look around I suppose. £33 seems about right for what it is
