My 1988 T25 1.6 TD has been developing this issue gradually over the last year or so. The squealing is sufficiently loud now for me to want to do something about it.
The squealing comes in even before the wheels have started turning. Pressure on the steering wheel either to left or right induces this noise which seems to come from towards the front of the engine bay. The wheels will turn with a judder - the noise then gets very loud.
The symptoms are there once everything is warmed up but steering is absolutely fine at any other than the slowest parking speed. The power steering fluid level is fine.
Any help much appreciated!
Scott

Re: Power steering judder and loud screaching at low speed
have you changed the fluid and filter in living memory ?
Re: Power steering judder and loud screaching at low speed
Sorry, been disconnected for a few hours so unable to come back.
blacky - possibly, but would that explain the noise being at the rear? Everything about the steering is fine except at very low speed.
Aidan - living memory for me with this van goes back 4 years. I've not touched power steering on this or any other vehicle I have owned!
I had earlier spotted this wiki - https://club8090.co.uk/wiki/St ... r_steering" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;, probably yours:) - but did not know to connect it to my symptoms. The bit about pressurising made me think this must be a job for a professional?
Is there something I can do to better confirm that this is the issue?
Cheers

Where did you think the steering pump was then? (At the rear - where the engine is

More than likely low on oil, often the case with old Land Rovers. A visual check takes 2 minutes.
Why would the glass be anything other than half full?

Thanks for the further replies
Things just have to be explained a little slower and in a bit more detail when dealing with me
Anyway, now I know there's a pump (see what I mean?) I shall go inspect the belt.
But I have to ask, where does oil enter into things?
Cheers

Although the power steering fluid level looks fine, the rubber pipe seems to be leaking where it joins the pump (does not seem too surprising, it just seems to be pushed in....) Aidan - is this the pipe you talk about here https://club8090.co.uk/wiki/St ... r_steering" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ?
The power steering belt is slipping - but it is not clear if this is contamination from oil/fluid or wear. The tension seems OK at about 10mm give...
I am sure that the fanbelt has started to complain and I have no record of when the cambelt was last replaced.
I am not going to be able to handle this stuff myself and I am inclined to just get a mechanic to fix all these belts replaced in one go, probably cheaper than piecemeal or major engine repair.
Could problem be anything else that I have missed?
Thanks

Pump has two banjo connections on - the low pressure feed pipe comes from the reservoir - it is a push fit on the reservoir and should be secured with a jubilee clip, but the other end is a proper swagged connection to banjo which screws into pump
the high pressure hose is swagged connections both end and goes onto the metal pipework with a compression joint
if the feed pipe is leaking then air will be drawn in when the pump demands fluid (ie any position other than straight ahead) and will make a noise, the more you turn the more the pump will complain
the pipe in the link I was referring to is the one connecting the front and rear low pressure steel pipes in the middle of the van
