Petrol and Smoke.

Post by Smosh »

MY van has decided to start smoking and smells petroly on starting it up. Its also stuttering quite a lot.

I was thinking it might be over fueling, so maybe choke issue... any suggestions how I can resolve this or what else it may be?

Cheers! :ok

Are all four plugs firing? A loose connection or iffy HT lead could mean one plug not firing. Does the engine sound like its missing?

yea, it does. Mind you these flat 4 sound odd anyway  . I've just done the dizzy cap and rotor arm. Bizarrely I think it has ben more pronounced since.

Do you reckon change the HT leads at the same time. I dont know when they were last done. Ive had it a year?

Is it dark grey / black smoke ?

If so, then yes = too much petrol.

Do you know how to check that the choke flap is opening correctly as the engine arms up ? (first thing to check).

ie, cold engine, remove the "pancake" (3 nuts) on top of the carb and look at the (closed) brass choke flap at the top of the barrel nearest to you. It should be closed (well "look" closed, actually is supposed to have a 3mm gap iirc). Then fire up the engine and over up to 10 minutes observe that flap. It should be fully open after about 5 to 8 minutes. If it does not do that, report back and someone (Kev ;)) will be along with words of wisdom.

Choke seems to be oapening fine. I didnt measure the gap but it doesnt look bad?

The carb seemed excessively oily, I assume this must be from the breather that comes from the oil filler (Crank case breather)?

In side the (air box?) plastic box above the carb there was oily mess when you ran your finger around it.

AS was there in the pipe connecting to the air filter box.

Is this normal? :?

okay, so Is it worth putting separate breather on blanking where it goes into the airbox? or is the oil minimal and probably a build up of a few years with out being cleaned?

Need to order her some leads and plugs will also go see if I can get the mixture tested somewhere.

pointless.
Any MOT/garage will have a gas analyser.
CO for a 1.9 DG should be around 2%
HC should be around 300 ppm
O2 around 1%
Lamba near to 1
