Petrol tank leaking (T25 1.9)

Post by bestonestaken »

Filled my fuel tamk up and smelt fuel on tank and under engine. After 24 hours the tank level seems to have stabilised at about 3/4 full. Does this point towards a hole in the tank or a hose?

Possibly a loose breather.you need to get the tank dropped to check.Make sure the tank is pretty empty first, as they weigh pretty heavy when full of fuel.

The metal breather pipes rusted away on my tank, check the small pipes adjacent the filler hose, another set on the other side, easy fix if it is.

And if you have not got one, get a fire extinguisher ;)

Every camper van should have a fire extinguisher on board !

If it's not the breather pipes / grommets it could be a rusty hole in the top of the tank (they are a bit prone to it).

Thanks all. Got extinguisher. Think I will take it to a trusted garage. I don't have anywhere to work on it and need it to commute soon. Don't like taking chances with fuel. This could explain why I am only getting 18 mpg!

Depending on the condition of the engine and carb, coupled to driving style and weight of "stuff" in the van, 18mpg is not unreasonable.

Once you've gone through all the palaver of dropping the tank, its probably worth fitting a new one, unless the tank looks great and the cause of the leak is obvious.

All the flexi's were cream crackered, not broken but not sealing on any of the solid pipe work, no fastenings on any of them?
Would fully recommend attaching all pipes to expansion tanks before brimming the tank to test
