Front Windscreen

Post by VWKat »

Hello fellow type 25ers!

I have some water leaking from my windscreen, I think I may have a rusty hole in the bottom of the windscreen channel on the passenger side..so, the windscreen rubber is 5 years old or so, it's quite new and I'm trying to do with on a budget.

Can I push the windscreen out at the bottom, far enough away from the body, so I can work on the hole in question, then replace the windscreen myself? I think this would be easier for me, as to remove the whole screen and re-fit it, would be difficult as I don't have an army of men to help :(

thanks..

Hi Kat,

I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong, but pushing the windscreen out from just the bottom is not a good idea. You run the risk of damaging the seal so that it does not seal properly again or even worse cracking the windscreen. The only way to do it properly would be to remove the screen entirely, carry out the repair and replace when finished using a thin bead of screen sealer behind the rubber to ensure a good seal.

If you are sure that there is a hole then this would be the only way to ensure a proper repair and a correct seal of the windscreen rubber. If the rubber is leaking though I know a friend who bought a product that you pour over the windscreen and it reseals the rubber. I cant remember what it is called but a goggle search may come up with something. If I remember I will let you know.

I've seen a couple break so be careful or your budget might need to rise. I'd even consider a new seal after the repair as you may reintroduce the leak.

no maybe a nother pair of mits
new seal from here
http://www.volkswagenemporium.co.uk/shop/contact.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
cut the old seal off, for whilst it may have been replaced , you dont kn ow the quality of it. this way the seal is a predetermined cost . your screen WILL stay intact and you only have the hole to worry about,
hey look in general and there is anewbie called The Clash, i hear he is up for all the Q's this evening :D

You DEFINATELY can't do this repair with screen in situ. Look at this page to get some idea of how bad it can be once its exposed:

https://club8090.co.uk/wiki/Bo ... well_leaks" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Its not as big a job as it sounds but welding will be required and forget any notion of aquatic sealant or duck tape. If it leaks you have to get in there and do it. I can't weld for toffee but I managed ok as you'll see.

Hi, sorry to hi jack this thread,

Ours need doing and as it is all stripped out I may as well do it now, has anyone got any experience with this repair panel from Alan Schofield,

http://www.alanhschofield.com/ourparts/ ... 5035A.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Fairly easy to make a piece but with both corners gone and having to do it outside I would like to save some time if poss,

Cheers

Getting screen out not that difficult and if its a good make of seal, you just need one fella on the outside with a rubber mallet while you pull the nylon cord on the inside to put it back. Takes 10 mins. I've had others come to me for assistance/assurance when removing screen - then they realise how easy it is. Ignore the scare stories.

Yes but the op has no experience,one easy slip and a new screen ££ plus chances are its a poor copy seal from one of our freinds lol which is why I would never remove intact,save money yes bit I feel its a corner cut too far and as I personaly never fit s/hand screen seals for obviouse reasons then that's the only advice I can give,
Ref the schofields bit ,yes they work trouble is you may find the rot has spread past that area

I'd tend to agree, breaking them is surprisingly easy too.

I don't remove them intact either. Thats asking for trouble. I always cut them out. However, providing you use a new genuine rubber, and aperature is properly repaired and not distorted, they go in dead easy. The only time I've struggled is when someone has bought in a cheaper 'thyroid' seal copy. Its like trying to squeeze size 8 wellies on a size 10 foot. I've seen the same with bays - buy a cheaper seal and any saving is rapidly lost to anxiety....

Does this just slip on top of the existing frame or does it need the old part cutting out then this being welded in?

never used that particular part but you do need to remove/cut out the rotten area and if you think about it, you dont want much sticcking up that may interfere with the profile that the seal fits to , just use common sense i suppose and if it looks right then it more than likely will be
