Well i took my head of only to find this damage :roll: it looks like somthing has got in and buggered the piston and head :roll:

Yep it is usually one of the carburettor accelerator pump jets.

Oh dear, looks like you're going to work on the Ariel next week then. My mate had one of them,I thought they were nice bikes

Clean it up and put it back together, theres nothing there that will cause any problems.

A mate recently had a M6 nut fall in the chamber which got pressed into the head, once removed and cleaned up a bit with a file it ran just as before.

Here's the head of my RD350LC after it ate a main bearing and spat it out the exhaust. A bit of emery & a polish and it' was nearly as good a new ;)

Thanks all, the head i can save but the piston and barrol are both scored. I do have a spair engine sitting in my shed in bits, can i use a piston and barrol from that if its in better condition?

Just hone the bore unless the scratches are too deep.

what engine code is that? CU?

I looked at swapping a single liner and piston on my DG engine but the donor engine wasn't marked with the piston weight group and I didn't risk it in the end.

Yep its the cu engine, By brother said its not to bad at all so i am going to hone the barrels and fit new rings. I will also clean the heads up and fit new valve guides and valves then new gaskets and seals all round :ok
