For one thing the 292 uses up the relay position for having front fogs fitted so if you either have front fogs or want them in the future the 292's off the menu (I think)

We live on an unlit road and no one has parking lights. That's a European thing that's never made it over here.

Thanks for the input, but if anyone wants to continue further debate on the "buzzer vs relay" debate then please start another thread. If you page back to my original question (three pages ago) it was about wiring in the buzzer option. I'd really like to know about that in this thread please. Is that ok with everyone?

Hopefully that is, and someone can confirm a location for an ignition off only earth connection / plug socket / fuse box pin. That was kind of the only question I had all that time ago..... The lights on feed I've got covered but not the ignition off only earth.

I had tried pin 9 on the instrument pod t14 fourteen pin connector. It has 12v when ignitions on, and earths when off, but I had an intermittent buzz, and after a day it doesn't work at all. I was hoping Cruz knew exactly where he'd connected his??? :|

Took my feed from black wire from ignition switch behind column shroud and the earth wire behind the heater controls.....I think. It was a long time ago

The way VW *intended* relay 292 to work, is that if sidelights are left on, the ignition is turned off, and the driver opens the door to get out, then the warning buzzer sounds for as long as the door is open.

I came across one in a scrapper the other day, and may well get round to fitting it. If I do, I will do it as per the diagram below from a Polo/Caddy for the 1L0 951 307 part.

Pin 86 - IG - Relay plate pin G2,5, Black wire
Pin 85 - door contact switch - Brown/White wire on left door switch or Brown/Black wire on right door switch
Pin 58 - number plate light - Relay plate pin E1, Grey/Green wire

PS. Scienceboy, if your G5 terminal is available IG can be connected there, though note on the above diagram relay 292 uses IG via a fuse (term 15a).

No probs.

I would add that should the driver use the indicator stalk to set 'parking lights' on, either on the left or right, then the buzzer won't sound if the diagram above is used, as the 'lights on' signal is picked up from the number plate light.

I am lost as it doesn't work when Ind/parking lights with the 292 relay mod
Am I missing out here!! :idea

If you want to use the relay for fog lights just add it on the back of the panel in parallel then you have both

Got a 292 relay a couple of weeks ago and was planning to wire it in, so got all the info from the Golf GTI owners club on how to connect it, but whilst searching yesterday I came across this post :D I thought I'd struck gold as my van is a 91 Westy with intermittent wipers, no wiring just plug in the relay :D :D
But looking this morning there's no 99 relay just a 19 :( :( guessing it's not a plug in job ??
Atlantic westy 91, Golf mk1 cabrio and looking to add a syncro to the list :-)

You need to buy a 99. Worked a treat in mine. It's elsewhere in here. I'll try link it when I can.

On the buzzer topic, I got that to work to. Must post that up too.....

That was an easy fix, plugged in 292 relay. Really weird high pitched sounding buzzer. My neighbours will be pleased, every other day one of them used to knock on my door to remind me to turn off my lights.

I have only had it work on 1 van that's got a 19 relay .

so it does work some how , jus not all the time . give it a go and see!

Just seen this again due to the bump.

Re-reading my original post, I didn't make it explict that the 'factory' way to fit the 292 relay is in a separate holder, clipped to the top of the relay plate (according to the VW diagrams I've seen). It wasn't fitted in any of sockets 1-12 on the CE1 relay plate. Apologies for any confusion.

also my original post about the idea was a quick and easy fit . seemed to work , may not be correct with vw but dosent seem to create issues and is more than within most peoples scopes

wiring and all is an option if you have the time and skill tho obviously
