I'm using a 40mm cvk from a Kawasaki kl650. It has a 190 main jet, lightened spring and I have lifted the needle 1 notch. This is basically the same carb as a Harley with the exception that the Harley carb has a fluted edge for the air filter. The inlet manifold is home made but I have seen some American imported manifolds for sale on eBay which would suit either a Harley carb /air filter combo or any other 40mm cvk with a K&N.
The bike starts a lot easier which is a god send as it sometimes sound like a bag of bolts has been thrown into the starter ring gear ( common issue with the XV's is the starter doesn't engage properly). Performance wise the bike pulls a lot stronger through the entire rev range and is really noticeable low down. The only draw backs is petrol consumption is a lot higher and it idles really lumpy but this could be down to my exhausts.

Lots of good advice so far, here's mine.
I had a BMW R80GS that I laid up for a year. Had the same problem as you on starting it up after that time. It was a combination of a perished carb diaphragm and lacquer in the carb jets and a rather curios wear ring in the cylinder bore from where the piston rings had rested. Hope you get it sorted and post up some pics of the project.
Are we going on anything else?
