Question for the bikers out there

Yamaha 1000cc V twin.. Cherished bike 1985 48000 miles .. Maintained regardless ... Put into garage in '06 in tip top condition... Oil changed prior to 2013 start up .. Only ran on one cyl.. Wouldn't idle... Carbs cleans.. Now idles.. But smokes a lot ???? Stuck piston ring???

Are the carbs balanced? What colour is the smoke - black/grey or blue?

Possible stuck ring, I used to squirt a bit of Redex down the spark hole and leave it overnight.

How long did you let it idle for. Could it be unburned fuel in the cylinder? The twin carb setup on the xv's are notorious for over fuelling on the front cylinder.

Could possibly be a broken piston ring or maybe a stuck valve? On the other hand, it could just need an italian tune up so fill up with fresh fuel and take it for a good old run!

They were quite an interesting bike when they first came out.
They make good Cafe Racers - a bit Norvinish if I could be so bold.

I love those engines. I had a chopped XVS650 that was the best bike I've ever had.

Nice bikes, hope you get it sorted out. Search t'internet for starter motor mods as these can be an issue. Also look at ditching the twin carb setup as these are also a nightmare for flooding and hydrolic lock when coupled to a slow starter motor . As i previously mentioned they tend to run rich on the front cylinder and a bit lean on the rear. After sitting for a while it also tends to smoke a bit on startup but clears up after a good run.

I love those engines. I had a chopped XVS650 that was the best bike I've ever had.

The XV's are silky smooth with bags of torque. I just sold my XS650 chop this year and bought this slightly modified TR1.

What would be an alternative carb then???

Carb lacquer.....all the lighter elements in the petrol evaporate off leaving a yellow hard lacquer blocking up jets etc...requires a carb strip & clean & new petrol.
