Jed's snorkel

Post by tforturton »

Recently, I've been trying to catch up with all the videos on the Campervan Culture site, and I became intrigued by the snorkel on Jed's van. First of all, if the van 'breathes' through the rear vents, why would you need a snorkel? And secondly, if you do need one, shouldn't there be one on both sides?
Not knocking them, they look very cool, and knowing Jed, I bet they work brilliantly. Just intrigued, that's all.

The side vents provide cooling for the engine in terms of air flow. The snorkel provides a watertight supply of air to the air filter to make sure the engine doesn't suck in water when in a damp patch. As the air filter is only on one side = one snorkel.

i think he was more interested in having a cyclone that would filter out sand and other crap before it hit the main filter and clog that up like on the original jx filters, getting ready for a little desert action

But syncros already have a cyclone unit before the filter housing in the engine bay... or is that only on petrol engines?

there is one built into the filter canister, but that needs to be emptied. The one on jeds slings the dust back out as far as i am aware. So a bit of a pre pre dirt sep.

Nope, the ones Jed and I have fitted stil need to be emptied, they just don't require going into the engine bay to be emptied.
They also work better than the standard one.

Definitely one for the desert rats. Maybe a bit too LRO "One life..." for most syncro owners?

The intake duct is listed as being for petrol engines - surely this works with diesel engines as well?

The petrol one is on the opposite side to the diesel, and I think the locating lugs are in the wrong place.

Someone asked us for the petrol one so we put a load on the shelf, surprisingly popular.
But, yeah, diesel is the opersite side.
If you have a diesel Van It should already be there.
