Some kind hit and run driver broke my glass today? Can the glass be replaced?

I noticed VW sell the mirror with the heat element backing plate for about £30 (291 857 547) and classic sell just the glass for nearer £50  (291 857 539)

Surely there must be an aftermarket heated glass cheaper than both the above? Anyone??

I bought the heated glass from vw easy to swap, get them before they go obsolete.........they probably can be had a bit cheaper from a wagon parts place but the time you spend trying to save a few quid...bay of fleas ?
were you parked up ? always fold them in when parked on the road

The glass is already obsolete from VW Aidan. They are not the same kind of mirror you find on syncro arms either. No heated glass on ebay just standard convex glass

I used to fold them in all the time but then they started to wear on the bottom mount of the arm and it caused them to flop in when driving in really strong winds. I removed them and noticed the edge on the bottom mount joint was wearing away with constant folding (after just 6 months) so I had to swap the arms over to compensate. Since then I've never wound them in again.

E D I T: Just dismantled the mirror and managed to get the broken glass off the heated element so I should be able to get some non-heated glass and stick it on the back :D

EDIT2: Like this LINK

EDIT3: Can anyone recommend something to stick the heating element to the mirror with? obviously the heating element still needs to get through. Would double sided tape suffice as I have some of that and it's quite thin??

vw managed to deliver me one of those mirrors with the glass broken, at that point I was able to get the glass (at my cost as I hadn't opened the box immediately and there was no tell tell sound of broken bits as they are wrapped in foam in the box) but of course once you told everyone the part numbers they soon flew off the shelf........and classic realised what they were worth so the few that are left are silly money now
Never had a problem with folding the syncro mirrors regularly or the electric ones, still nice and stable, did you shorten the arms to make them vertical or are they running at an angle ?

My arms are at an angle.

Do you have any idea what I could bond the element to the glass with?

I know you've got LT 4x4 heated mirrors , hence the 291 part number, just wondered if you'd modified the arms when you swapped over to the T3 bottom bracket, may be why they have worn the detents
I also peeled off the heating element and have saved it for a rainy day but as I managed to get a replacement heated glass haven't tried to stick back on yet; a good quality double sided tape would probably work or a contact adhesive I guess

Sorry Aidan. I forgot your more savvy than most on part numbers etc. I'm the one getting confused by it

I didn't see the need to shorten the arm seeing as the mirrors pivoted straight.

I already had a replacement heated mirror stashed away, that I have fitted, but I wanted to repair the broken one to be my new spare. Would you believe that an entire arm with heated mirror with arm is cheaper from vw than the heated glass from classic?

I've ordered a standard convex glass from ebay and already have a large roll of 50mm wide double sided sticky tape. So I'll stick the element to the glass with that and wire it up and test it

Thanks for your help :ok

Standard genuine glass came. I removed the paper backing and using double sided tape, that I already had, I stuck the heating element on the mirror back. Replaced the wire to the element for a longer one with some 16amp twin core (as I'd sipped it) and then pluged it into the van to test. Mirror got nice and warm. :D
