I don't know tbh - Are you saying turbo lump without turbo that has been dropped in later , because there is no turbo on it, i wasn't expecting turbo and never felt any turbo pull or kick in!

no...just that it didn't look like a jx.

two types really...1.6 either td or n/a

n/a is very frugal but many would say a bit of a bind on acceleration / hills.

What does it look like to you?

I have no knowledge of vw diesels - Aircooled yes defo but diesel wasserboxers none at all!

They are sorting the split breather atm so i am not concerned about that for now!

Bilbo _are_ British, aren't they?

It's certainly a conversion of a panel, rather than starting from a window van, though.

Is it a ex panel van- not a bus?

Look at how the glass sits on the side panels. The seals sit proud of the surface, rather than flush, because there's no pressed recess for them.

Checking the plate comes back as "Transporter 78ps", 1588cc diesel. "Transporter" would imply van.

Just chatting to some other vw owners and they seem to think the panel conversion and 1600 engine are minus's - economy is no better than my 1600 bay and the rot or rot potential with the panel van is quite high ( although there is no sign of rot now tbh) so i am stuck between

Sensible and practicle

Image

and

Cool and future issue's

My van as it is now

"1588cc 78ps" would imply it started off life with a JX turbo diesel, so before writing it off due to the engine (I may be wrong, but you seem to be assuming 1600 non-turbo CS - but that'd long since died before your van was built. By that age, the non-turbo would have been the 1.7 KY. Not fast, but friends report a genuine 40mpg on their European touring.

I'd suggest it's worth doing a bit more digging and figuring out what you're actually looking at. My (utterly non-expert on diesels) money's on a non-turbo 1.9 that's been dropped in. What did it go like on your test drive?

Image

If there's no rot, then don't write it off because a converted panel might be more likely to rot than an originally window van. Hell, they're _both_ likely to rot this far down the line, and not just around the windows, so if it's a solid van it's a solid van. <shrug>

Either way, it HAS to be better than a Bay.

Thank you for your input - invaluable! :ok
