getting the right tyre woes (185r14C content)

We had a blow out t'other day on the way home from Devadubs (pic attached incase you like blown out tyres).




How many holes can you count?






No real dramas, pulled it over, spare on, off we went. But then this week I've been trying to get a replacement 185r14C for a spare. Good lord do they not make them anymore? Ended up getting a part worn as it was all I could find. Was I just having a bad google day getting one or are they super rare? Plenty of car variants but no 'C' ones. Is the 'C' that important, can you get away with normal ones?


Still on the plus side poor replacement tyre availability will help me justify getting some alloys on with the mrs

Any half decent tyre place should be able to order any of those in, probably for next day.

Just picked up a barum vanis in that size from a local tyre supplier for £60 fully fitted,ordered last week and fitted this week. Always worth trying local indy's.

Get them sent to you house, most tyre fitters will charge you about £7.50 for a valve and ballance.

Avons here for £50 ....probably a tad more than £60 posted and fitted but then they are a better brand than Barums.

As a note here.
How old are the tyres you have on?
Old tyres perish and this is the result.
Tyres have a usable life and it's not just milage.
Age is also a limiting factor

I would be replacing all of them including the spare for fresh rubber. For safetys sake.

aye a good point well made, and something I've been weary of since the blow out. The van's previous owner did very low mileage in it ... 30,000 in 10 years, so there's a good chance all the tyres are past their use by date.


Luckily I work for GoodyearDunlop so I get a massive staff discount, unfortunately we can't get tyres in the right size due to our sales dept. No wonder the company is in the Sh....

I made Goodyear tyres for twenty years until production stopped in Wolverhampton
We were told the company was in the poo then
In reality it was not.
It was merely cheaper to produce them in SA and poland.

However, I'm sure you'll understand that like all organic compounds they degrade.
In my view, tyres should be replaced after five years of fitting.
Six at the most.
