I need a new silencer
I need a new (early type) exhaust silencer for a watercooled '85 1.9 petrol engine. Any recommendations would be appreciated. I see JK do one but.....
Are we going on anything else?

85, but early or later layout? If early there are a few solutions, if later there are a few solutions.

Re: I need a new silencer
what in front of you Ian? Could be dodgy.
Well, you might consider the custom route if you want to save pennies - works out cheaper than the stock VW item and sounds nicer (in my opinion) : https://club8090.co.uk/wiki/Exhausts_Custom" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Or, anything that fits a 1700/2000 Aircooled camper as the holes line up. You just have to watch for clearance. Beyond that you start getting into stainless etc etc etc

Re: I need a new silencer
There's only a couple of companies that make them both seem to last about 6-7 years. Ernst seem to be slightly better quality, just a case of who does the best deal on them.

I quite like that. Presumably the headers bolt on where the original silencer would?

Yes, absolutely.
Do bear in mind you'll need to reshape the rear apron a little to get the clearance around the header - depends how precious you are about it. Some are not - I wasn't. Everyone seems to like the sound of mine. Sounds like a Ferrari if you red line it.

Re: I need a new silencer
Well that went remarkably well. As soon as I looked at your post I went on fleabay and found a ZX6R end can....two miles up the road. Put in a bid for £1.20 and have just come back from picking it up
CovKid; did you mount the silencer to anything? Oh, and do you know where I can just get the header pipes from?

Re: I need a new silencer
You'll see theres a small bracket on it? I just used a £1 shop bungee, hooked on to a convenient part of the engine. Did the trick and you don't see it. Its probably not needed actually but I just adopted a belt n braces approach all the same. Sounds like you just need the header now. Could only see a stainless one on ebay but VW Heritage sometimes put steel ones through ebay when 'shop soiled'. Just keep your eyes peeled.
One here but I wouldn't pay that much: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Thunderbird-E ... 27d371a9e7" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
£1.20 - go fella.
PS If you go to a Kawasaki dealer they may even have the gasket for it - saves time but I'll bet its a lot more than what you paid for entire can.

Re: I need a new silencer
Sorry, just edited my post before I saw your reply. So will be on the lookout for just the headers now. Cheers again for a great bit of advice. £1.20; can't believe it!
