Re: My relaxed pace CS to 1Y conversion
you can either remove the hose from on top or remove the little bracket and pull the unit out of the engine.
Time is a drug. Too much of it kills you

Be extra extra careful as they snap off the plate very easily

I'm thinking I'll disconnect the join further up the pipe and leave the one that's on the new engine in place and cannibalise that newer pipe to fit

Just undo the jubilee clip and pull the black pipe out .its the one on the new engine you need to be careful with as they aren't interchangeable
Warm the black pipe with a heat gun and when its supple push it over the new valve

Re: My relaxed pace CS to 1Y conversion
So everything is disconnected on the old engine.
After plus gassing all the engine mount bolts last night I decided to check that they were all loose. All good. Except one. The nut rotates, but so does the 'fixed' bolt. Felt above the cross member but the head of the bolt feels very very thin. Now trying to work out what to do.
The culprit bolt on the left.

Not much to get a grip on.

It's just a normal screw/nut, you'll need two spanners or whatever is your preferred tool for such a job.
Failing that f*** it off with an angle grinder !

I left the bars in and just took the rubber mounts off

Re: My relaxed pace CS to 1Y conversion
Old lump finally out

Managed to spill a little oil

I think I might be investing in an engine hoist to get the donor engine out of the Golf.
Next job is to strip down the CS, clean up the bits and refurbish mountings etc.
Having had a better look, I think I need to take out the gearbox and replace some seals too.

Re: My relaxed pace CS to 1Y conversion
So have been investigating and playing with the donor 1Y engine.
Got a bit of an oil leak from somewhere. I suspect it might be the head gasket. For the sake of 30 quid or so I think I'll just change it.
Having taken the rocker cover off, I noticed that the rocker cover seal has orange stuff all over it. Is this some kind if gasket sealant? If so, do I need to put this in when I change that gasket? And what about sump gasket? Will that need sealant?
I'm presuming that the head gasket won't need any sealant.
Can people confirm this orange stuff is sealant?

Seem odd questions for someone who is about to change the head gasket

Why odd? I just want to make sure and confirm.
My knowledge is slowly being built up, but I'm quite happy to give everything a go. I can read manuals and watch videos, but like a bit of confirmation and reassurance once in a while from people who have actually done things. Theory is all well and good but the people writing the manuals weren't working on 20 year old engines with wear and tear and previous owners tinkerings.

Re: My relaxed pace CS to 1Y conversion
Your oil leak looks as though it is the rocker gasket - hence someone's attempt to seal it with the orange sealant. That oil is coming from above the head gasket.

Re: My relaxed pace CS to 1Y conversion
im with obg..unless your 101% sure its from the headgasket then leave well alone.
you dont need any sealant with the head gasket or the sump one .the stuff on the rocker is sealant and has been use to try and stop that leak thats all over your engine ,rather than just cleaning and replacing the gasket..looks like it didnt work

Re: My relaxed pace CS to 1Y conversion
Thank you for the advice.
I suspected head gasket as there is a lot more oil down by it but its both above and below the head gasket.
Plan of action…
Give engine a damn good clean to remove all old leaked oil.
Replace rocker cover gasket after giving everything a good scrub to remove gunk from grooves.
Run it for a few weeks to see if oil appears anywhere else.
Next challenge is to get the flywheel off old engine. All but 2 bolts removed do far. Unfortunately someone got in there before me and chewed up the last 2 bolts. Plan to plus gas, heat, secure mole grips on and knock the hell out of it with the lump hammer. Unless anyone has a more precise method?
Have also been reading up about rubber gasket versus windage tray. Don't think I like the idea of extending the holes on the bell housing so may just go with rubber gasket. Will this cause any problems?

Re: My relaxed pace CS to 1Y conversion
You only need to extend the holes a couple of mm - not much at all.
I always clean an engine down before beginning to strip it down - keeps it watertight for the degreaser and pressure washer or whatever.
