So after killing my CS engine by cracking the head, I decided the 1Y would be be easiest upgrade for my first engine swap.
Have read lots of posts on the subject and I'm sure ill be asking lots of questions too.
I'm not in a rush to do the change and this might take a while, but I want to do a decent job and change seals etc to reduce future maintenance/repairs.
I have my old CS lump still in the camper and I now have a 1993 Golf sat on my driveway with the donor 1Y in it. It runs fine and sounds ok. Have given it a quick clean so that I can run it for a while to check for oil leaks etc.

The donor has a Bosch injection pump
And a Bosch alternator
Which at 70 Amps is 5 Amps more powerful than the alternator on the CS.

I quite like the alternator setup with the big pulley and spring loaded.
Good luck,

Any ideas on how you are going to tackle the oil dip stick and the injection pump lever?

Just trying to disconnect everything to remove old engine. But what's this cylindrical thing with a pipe coming from it?

Thanks
Didn't see any mention of that in the Bentley manual engine removal page.
Do I just disconnected it by undoing it?
