CV Joint boots

Yes it is a messy job but at least you can get some fresh grease in your joint I spose...not encountered the rien brand...vw do use different suppliers as well so maybe tomorrow the boots will be made by someone else...or worse still obsolete! No promises these genuine boots are even better...but had some on my van since s/p and ok so far....do have a 2 year warranty on though so at least will be replaced by vw if need be.


I'm going got look at thermo plastic boots off a golf etc as well...can see a reason why a 100 mm inner cv boot from say a mk3 golf 16v won't fit...but we shall see.

GKN couldn't find one that fitted the joint and the shaft.
New beetle inner was the closest but still too loose to use unless you used a spacer/packing piece/sleeve.

True.. but 3 years and 12k km aint a lot since I did them.. joints looked good and no dry grease or exposed steel in there.. so I must have done something right.. LOL

New beetle or new new beetle? Old new beetle is same as a mk4 golf underneath, how much is the shaft to thin by?

What a great thread! Fwiw I can't say I' ve had any perishing problems, using mostly gen VW, or Gkn boots purchased a lot more than 2 years ago, more like 5-10 years. Maybe this is affecting only fairly recent production. Those losses I've had have generally ben due to damage.

When fitting a new joint, I've kept the old joint and boot, got a box of em here. The old boots are mostly still intact, probably worth cleaning up and reusing. Can anyone suggest a solvent for old underseal and grease that won't damage the rubber?

I have the dims at work, something like T3shaft is 22mm and the golf boot 28mm

Could be wrong but something like that.

I have another I saw on a vehicle in the workshop I need to check out that's a candidate too.

Just can't be arsed putting the laptop on for ETKA.

Anybody notice the cv boot kit in the pic has an expiry date on the box? Worrying in itself!....pity it's not a stock item or I could be in line for some old stock...shame!

I will pester the warranty milf tomorrow at work and see if I can get a name for you to go on...we have a book of manufactures codes...the kits come wiith new snore washers as well,

that is just the "shelf" life expiry date so VW Group can do a stock check when auditing dealerships.

Just been under the van and noticed the rear inner and outer boot have both failed on the offside Luckily i have 3 boot kits on the shelf, but i really cant be bothered with removing the bashplate, from memory i think i have to take off the difflock actuator as well? "feck"! Again, boots less than a year old? Think I might just pull the shaft through the trailing arm.
Well here's a pic of the inner on the other side, so you can see the angles, i might as well do this one while im at it really. All will then be the same age



i really don't think these can be blamed on the lift, as ive only done about 300 miles max since the lift, plus people have been driving around with raised vans for a fair while. Mine seems to have settled at 52.5cm rear and 51.5 front, so not massively over standard settings?
I do have to say, the rubber just looks perished. Even the one pictured above, the rubber is really dry. Shame that a 16" boot won't be a uk vw part

Dunno what others think.... but that boot looks like its pulled far to far down the shaft... cant have helped....
well.. just my opinion...
And.. Isnt the boot just a std Audi 100 inner????

and 2wd inner fronts..... same CV joints...

Funny.. I just happen to have a 100 quatrro gearbox and rear diff with driveshafts.... in my shed...

It's a pain in the ass as its all coming apart in 9 weeks to have wheel bearings, brake rebuild ect at BW. Should I just say bugger it and drive it for that period?... Maybe seal the joints somehow, sainsburys carrier bags

I reckon unless you plan on submerging the joints or going very fast they will be fine for a short time...don't look very split anyway.
