CV Joint boots

Post by syncropaddy »

I was dropping the engine and box out of the Syncro today and I noticed that the CVJ boots were split on all four rear joints, one front outer and both front inners! These were all fitted just before Syncro25 and were the Spidan brand!

Utter shoite!

...but then, 65 mph through that forest track when we came over, oh and the subsequent 4-wheel lockup for 20 yards didn't play a part?

Joie de vivre I believe it's called.

I've only done about 15,000 kms since then ....... rubbish quality. I did keep some of the old ones so I can see those ones going back on!

Had the same issue myself with lobro gkn boots off mr b...only did 18 months then really cracked...so this time got real vw one...might still fail but as they have a 2 year warranty I will be slinging them back at vw...twice as expensive of course!

Your comments have been forwarded to GKN.
Disappointing for us, seems your not alone, we've had some other feed back about them too.
We know about it and are looking into it.
I enquired about using a "fast" boot but they won't work at the angles we want, also been looking for a thermoplastic boot but there isn't one the right dimensions, GKN suggested a few boots quite near but not near enough.
We'll look for another brand until GKN tell us what's going on with them.
I have a sneaky suspicion that one of the ingredients that go into making the rubber has been outlawed or something and the replacement just doesn't cut It.
Anyway, I've mentioned this to them before and I've forwarded the above to them, if they come back with anything remains to be seen.

Your probably right and I don't in any way hold you responsible...I'm not the sort to twine about about something that's out of your control and but glad you are giving gkn some grief about it non the less..whether the vw ones will last any better I dunno but may even be older stock...I got those in rush anyway for s/p and wouldn't think twice aboutbchuckingbthem back at vw as the prices are obviously inflated unlike your reasonable ones.

while we are on the subject of cv joints, dose any know where i can source new the front inner bolts?
they are a couple of mm longer than the ones used on the rears to compensate for the spacer between the joint and the diff.

thanks neil

Yes. Mercedes W124 CVJ bolts are identical to the inner fronts. Its the one on the left!

Might be a time to see what VW themselves have to offer and if all fails I'll try Merc/BMW etc
