Hydraulic tappets

Hi, I dont know if this has been covered but recently one tappet became rattley and I suppose drained down in a matter of hours. The answer seemed to be go for a good long run and it will pump up again.
It got me thinking regards adjusting the tappets. How do you know what state your hydraulic bits are in when you adjust. If I had adjusted mine when one has drained down what would happen when it pumped up again. Presumeably stop the valve from seating.
