2.1 engine breather pipe (insert)

Hi,

At the end of the pipe which goes from the crankcase breather to the air filter assembly is an insert about two inches long, wires plug into it. There is a restriction hole on one side - does this restriction face the breather or the air box?

I took it out when I removed the disintegrating old hose but have no idea which way around it was!
