Vinyl V Fabric for rock and roll bed

I have made some covers for our bed cushions, they aren't fluted or piped, which looks tons better, but I bought the ivory vinyl, 10 m for around £55 plus postage from eBay, and the blue, which is thicker (just) was £24 (I think) but for 2.5 m. The seats now look like this





I've done the door cards too, again not fluted cos I don't know how



However, I've had the front seat covers made, am waiting for them to come, much excitement then

I think that is a very good price. I am a big fan of vinyl but I prefer to put a duvet down first on the bed before I sleep on it. Dont be all flash and have white stitching like I did. Not a good idea.

Yeh, we tend to put a duvet down on the bed first too.

What's wrong with the white stitching?

Vinyl is very 1960s/70s and nasty. It makes you sweat whether as a passenger (sticky irritable kids?) or even more when trying to sleep on it (assuming you are camping in the UK and we have a proper Summer for the first time in 7 years).

My r&r bed had vinyl on it when I bought it. My van had belonged to a surfer. I had the vinyl taken off and re-covered with cloth which has a design that is child proof ie the colour and pattern doesn't show the dirt. Really comfy to sit and sleep on and the stains don't show. Still if you like vinyl go for it.

Looks good. How do you find the vinyl for sleeping and sitting on? A sweaty hell? Or OK?

We haven't slept on the new seats yet but they were covered in vinyl before and to be honest, we use two sleeping bags, one on the bottom and one over the top, or we would use a sheet and duvet, and I didn't notice any problems. Yes vinyl may be sweatier than fabric but we have two small dogs and I need something that wipes clean and doesn't stain. Also I am aiming to get a memory foam mattress topper - I know it means extra packing but even an inch thick one would make a difference to sleeping for me (I have memory foam bed mattress at home) and then I will make a fitted sheet cover thing that will go over the topper, Velcro shut at the bottom so it can just be squashed up to put away. I'm also getting vinyl front seat covers made, again so I can wipe them clean. If it ever does get hot and sunny, I'll put a cotton seat pad on them to stop the 'sweat/stick' syndrome.
Your quote for professional fluted and piped seats including foam sounds good, the very rough quotes I found were twice that! I enjoy making things, it's nowhere near professional quality but it'll do for us. If it does get too bloomin hot and sticky, I'll make some cheapo cotton covers for the seats
It would be nice to think that this year it will be hot, sunny, dry and lovely for weeks on end, then I'll know for sure if vinyl was a good choice, until then, it's fine, we like it and its practical too.

Oh yeah I forgot to say, I got the front seats covered to match, so comfy sweat free seats for everybody. I hated sitting on vinyl seats in my old bay window.

One other consideration in the for/against vinyl

Fabric covered seat cushions on the r&r bed probably won't slide off as easily as vinyl does. The old seat covers on our van weren't too bad but the vinyl was quite thick, but they did shoot the dog onto the floor once or twice, and the new ones slide about as well, so I've had to put restraining straps on them, not ideal but it works although if I were carrying children in the back I would want to make sure the seats were firmly fixed to the bed, as well as the usual seat belts etc.

It's all down to personal preference in the end, we all like different things - thankfully

Those seat look lovely, sympathise about kids and white stitching though. Memory foam is a great idea and when I've got a bit more cash I may replace the foam in our seat to save lugging a topper, makes a lot of sense. A good nights sleep is priceless and makes a holiday.

I have today taken the plunge and taken the van down to the upholsterers for measuring up the bed!

Going for fluted 'dune' coloured vinyl, with 'ocean blue' piping and an ocean blue stripe down the middle.

Won't be done until April but will post some photos up once complete.
