My own experiance of replacing cam belts locking the the bottom tooth cog stops it moving off top dead centre on the flywheel. On fitting the cam belt over the sprockets there is a tendancy to turn the bottom cog thus one tooth out in relation to TDC.Theres a threaded pin in most timing kits that screws into the cog and stops it turning.Make sure the cam is timed& but is loose on the taper shaft so when the toothed belt is placed over the teeth it will fit easy.

Sounds like a diesel to me.

How did it slip a tooth then? Was it loose? Any hunches?

I think its been like that for ages i changed the belt but was silly and just marked it didnt use any tools ...my fault i promise never to do that again
its actually easier to use the tools anyway !
of course it could have been set wrong already!
i main think the problem of bad running was fuel related.

or alternatively tighten so you can *just* turn the belt 90 degrees in the middle of the longest run.
