1Y major problem!
i was driving along no problem nice and steady running great as usual
when i heard a strange noise not a knock but more high like a tap
and it lost loads of power power i managed to get home about half a mile and it is running really bad and smoking like white smoke?
now ive changed the fuel and air filter but its still hard to start and running really bad with l;oads of white smoke?
i cannot see any damage to the cam belt but im wondering if the timming has slipped???
Any ideas what it could be ?

Headgasket most certainly-gone pot to pot
still a relatively easy and inexpensive fix-just need to do a compression test on each cylinder to confirm.
you will need cylinder head gasket, new stretch bolts hopefully no head work(machining) a few alignment tools and the all important know-how. plenty on here with the knowledge but you need to start with the compression test.

Have you tried a search (i admit the search function on here is terrible) on here, brickyard and google? There is loads of info about this.
You need a star shaped socket to get the head bolts off and on (GSF sell the bolts and the socket) and you will need a torque wrench when you put the head back on to tighten the bolts correctly.
For the timing, sound like you need to get it checked but lock everything down at the pump (yes a drill bit will work) and at the end of the cam (a flat bar goes in the slot).
I don't know how old your cam belt or tensioner is, but it might be worth changing that at the same time (more expense).
All in all, its not a hard job but its not cheap. In the past, i've just changed the engine for a spare rather than change the head from the symptoms you have had.
Thinking about it, i'd be checking the timing before you assume the head gasket has gone. I the timing is fine then the engine could be terminal - i wouldnt waste the money doing the head gasket if thats the case.
How is the oil level?
My advice is to step back a bit and think about what the problem is. I have changed an engine before when all i needed to do was fit another bottom pulley bolt
because i just assumed the worst...
The good thing about 1Ys is that they are cheap - almost as cheap as new bits for the head...
Good luck,
Ringo

Ok the cam is out a bit! at least 1 tooth looking at end slot when flywheel marks lined up
so do i just slacken off the cam bolt how do i stop the cam turning when i undo bolt?
its hard to see the pump as its burried
blowing a severe gail and no shelter...good job van is facing into it!

Ok just made a nifty little tool for the pump and the pump is also out!
probs 1 tooth again
in fact the cam and pump look right to each other
so im hoping once i set it right...
crazy thing is i thought it was running ok so why did it suddenly go like this?
do you recon it would run really **** like this?

Re: 1Y major problem!H E L P!
Just re-read and looks you are at tdc.
The belt must have moved. Either it slipped or the bottom pulley is loose.
I guess the pump could have moved if its loose?
You need to find out or it could just happen again (if resetting the timing fixes it).

Re: 1Y major problem!H E L P!
Whats the correct way to tension the belt?
the bottom pulley seems ok must be on a key yes?
i couldn't imagine the belt slipping round 1 tooth eh?
i really hope its going to run better! i need it running
