Zig CF8 and split charger

Post by pintofbestbitter »

I'm struggling to understand the wiring on my van. Does anyone have a similar set up? There are two things which control charging and battery selection etc, which makes things complicated

There is a Zig CF8 box (which has a battery charger), a leisure and engine battery. There is also a ?Amber valley ?WSPC-10 split charger which was fitted by the previous owner, prior to us buying it.
The Zig has a switch which lets you choose 'touring' or 'on-site'

We faffed around for ages last weekend with the voltmeter and worked out:
- the engine charges both batteries
- the Zig seems to charge the leisure battery only (regardless of touring/on-site setting)
- both batteries go flat if you leave the cooling fan on (whoops)
- It seems with the switch in the on-site position BOTH batteries are connected in parallel (eg turning on the fridge causes voltage drop in both) but in the touring position it only drains off the leisure battery

Anyone got one of these and know how it works?? Any help appreciated, thanks!

CF8 Manual http://www.club80-90.co.uk/pages/downlo ... ig-cf8.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The only 12v part of the fridge that should be connected to the Zig is the electronic ignition for the gas flame (assuming you have a 3 way absorption type fridge and not a compressor type that someone has connected directly). The fridge should be powered on 12v from a relay that only connects it when the engine is running so the alternator supplies the power.

What conversion is your camper?

Do a 'Search' of the electrical forum; Zigs come up a lot. 'Search' button top right of page :wink:

Thanks - actually yeah. Turns out if you read the manual it does make more sense!

If anyone comes across this in the future,
useful stuff here: https://club8090.co.uk/wiki/Ca ... it_charger" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I'm still going to put in a relay to stop the fridge and cooling fan being able to drain both batteries, as they currently can do!
