Good luck to the fella.

People who collect stamps dont usually lick them and stick them on envelopes, they usually stick them in albums. Similarly, to pursue a passion in restoring and collecting motor vehicles does not mean you have to drive them.

In this particular case, the man does not have a driveway to do as you suggest, but drives the ones that are 'legal' and 'complete' on a regular basis. The remainder of the 25 vehicles are 'work in progress' and the quality of that work is, to my mind, beyond reproach. That guy has spent 6 years tracking down a NOS rear door for the Olive Green estate, travelled 800 kms (in one of the Jeeps) just to make sure that the quality of the re chroming was to the right standard. He had to buy 4 FC Jeeps to get enough parts to complete the blue one in the pics. He spent 2 months travelling around the US looking for the correct material so he and his wife could remake the seat covers .... This is a collectors passion. This is what old vehicle ownership is about. He doesn't have a 'Brickwerks' to ring up and order bits the way we have. I admire what this bloke does and those like him as they preserve the past so you and me can see and enjoy what came before.

Amazing. What this guy does is amazing. Like this kind of restorers... Not gonna talk about money. :idea

True, restoring very old stuff, with bits missing can be a very painstaking affair...

Paddy, if you ever get over this way again on a flying day and you haven't been, the
Shuttleworth is a must visit museum not far from us...

Dedication is a good word, as the IWM has just had two First World War aircraft built, as new from scratch by TVAL in new Zealand, The Albatross DVa and RE 8.
Even the RE8's Aircooled V12 was built from scratch, copying a non-operational version... I think you can imagine the difficulties involved, especially working out by trial and error, how the lubrication system actually worked

Image

We saw them fly at the last show, maybe for the only time before going to the IWM Hendon for static display... that's some stamp licking, make a mistake in the RE 8 and as it did on the Western front, it'll bite hard. And all Albatross' had a habit of losing lower wings

Another two beauties which flew the other weekend, their RR Kestrel V12s just purring beautifully, reckoned to be the most beautiful biplane fighters ever built. If Chamberlain had not come back waving that 'Peace in my time' bit of paper, these might have been up against ME 109s!

I saw one of these fly in1966, and the same one again three weeks ago... did need a pretty full refurb during the 80's though, after 50 years of flying :P
