That Brickwerks kit looked ok. Or leave the existing external stuff to retain the original 'look' and fit a new fully rated hook up point behind the number plate flap like a few others do and wire from there perhaps?

Thanks for the advice and clearing a few things up for me guys. I was planning to replace all internal wiring regardless of the type of socket on the van. After checking the size of the us socket and the brickwerks socket I don't think its going to work, you're right a surface mount is the right and only way to go.
I'm on holiday in the van during the Olympics and I don't think I'll get round to it before we go so it looks like a job for next year unless I get time at my mums on the way to Wales and Jacksons in Arley have the gear in stock.
