fuel tank advice

filled the van up at the pump right to the neck £70 and then noticed fuel dripping from what looks like the bottom of the neck .is the neck welded to the tank or is there some sort of join that can leak ?

From what I have read on here with related posts to yours is that the metal type fuel tanks can corrode at the seams, which with a full tank takes the level over this seam, thus causing the leak. Also it's known that the filler neck can rust away too.

i`ve checked the seams and the tank is in pretty good condition from what i can see without removing it ,which is why i asked if the filler neck is welded or jointed in some way ?

The filler neck goes through a rubber grommet in the tank. These can leak but other parts are more prone ie: rubber breather pipes/the top of the tank peppered and porous and weeping around and down.
The reason I say this is because the filler neck seal isn't necessarily one of the things that leaks ONLY with a full tank..

if you have the later plastic filler the it wont rust through , early metal ones do , but as above , more liekly to either be perished breather hose or hole in the tank caused either by corrosion or rubbing to the top of the tank .

Hi guys, I came across this thread after I broke down en route to Camperjam on Friday. Heading down the M6 and loss of power a few times before engine cut out completely. RAC found lots of water in my fuel tank. Drained at garage and fine after that, but I'm wondering how the water got in there in the first place
It was torrential rain and I had topped up at Penrith Morrisons 130 miles earlier and thought it was dodgy fuel?

But reading this thread, I too had fuel dripping from underneath filler pipe when I looked under wheel arch weeks before when I topped up to the gunnels. If the pipe is leaking fuel, then could constant spray from wheels in lengthy downpour have allowed water to seep into the pipe and down into the tank.

Is there a known problem with the filler pipe, or is a porous/corroded tank more likely. Never had this problem before though.

Grateful for some worldly advice.

at the top of the filler neck , behind the cap there is a rubber elbow.
this spilts and allows water into the tank.

very common and usually the source. but also the breater pipes perish also
