oil sump plug

Post by Choppski »

Went to do an oil change today and i could not move the sump plug at all....and in my attempts i've rounded off the plug a little where a socket plug isn't making a nice fit - using a 13mm. i've changed it twice previously with not issues and now i feel that i've screwed up somehow.

i tried a socket spanner to see if it made good contact with the teeth and it does, but just doesn't budge???

Just to check...in case i've been silly....as you look at the engine from underneath you undo by turning the spanner anit clockwise - correct?

i tested this theory on the strainer plug and it worked fine....but i feel like i'm going silly. And no one seems to have new sump plugs in for my CU engine. So until i do i won;t reattempt to undo until i get a replacement plug.....

Advice guys? i have cross threaded or can these seize on some how? i normally finger tight then socket tight, but i could have made a mistake?

BTW - its been about 12 months since i changed the oil last.

Thanks

Before proceeding, order a new sump plug, and washer from Brickwerks.

Then once in hand, using the best fitting socket (Possibly smaller, and tapping it onto the sump plug) use a bigger wrench to get more leverage, and slowly apply pressure anti-clockwize.

A 1/2" socket is fractionally smaller (at 12.7 mm) than a 13mm socket and might give you better purchase on the slightly damaged nut ;)

thanks guys,

the engine was warm when i attempted this. I took it for an MOT - and she passed....with the badge of houour of advisories - slight oil leak. Basically it looks like a couple of push rod seals have perished...another job to do!

i'll try the tips and let you know.

Try a decent penetrating oil, Plusgas or Rost Off Ice.

Would've thought that the sump plug would already be well lubricated though with all that oil in the sump. But like you say, its got to be worth a try, fingers crossed for you.

are you using a 12 point socket? try a 6 point (6 sided) and that will grip it better, wd40 and the rest wont help, its not seized in there the spanner is slipping, last resort would be a decent pair of vice grips, that will move it in no time

I'd be tempted to drain through the strainer plug rather than risk stripping the threads on the sump plug, oil will still come out just the same.
