evening , just a quick question im replacing my radiator with a new brickwerks one , my rad has a manual switch on the dash yhat you use if the temp gets hot ,this was ok but now im replacing it what do i need to do it automaticaly a new switch on the rad ? i dont understand why it was bypassed in the first place thank you jeff

first you need to understand that some folks just don't trust the fan coming on and rescuing them from over heating. that's why they have a chicken switch, the sort you can turn on the cooling fan as well as the vans ability to turn it on.
The WBX Engine likes to operate within a certain temperature, the thermostat, Radiator and cooling fan help it do all that automatically.

Early vans had just a single speed fan, later ones (post '686 I think) had a two speed fan.

My gauge rarely goes above the half way mark, it did once, it went to 3/4's of the way up, in some very extreme hot weather, but the fan was on all the same.. it just couldn't cool it quick enough at the speed we were traveling at.

So take a look at the wiring and in particular the plug that attaches to the thermostatic switch, two wires indicate a one speed fan, three wires a two speed fan

thanks kev im replacing the whole lot rad heater matrix etc , my brother in law fabricates steel and hes taken the broken bleeder valve to work and hes making me a stainless steel one

I second Kev. I would like one of those in stainless steel too, but without the bleeder valve as that is not really essential and is just another place to leak from.
