Valve Height

Hi All,

2.0 Cu Engine.

Just after a second oppinion. I think I know whats needed..
Pulled the rockers covers off today to replace the hydraulic lifters..Anyhow looking at number 3 cylinder (The hottest one..I know) The inlet valve is sitting higher than the rest..I mean its sitting proud..say 3 mm..
Am I right in thinking that my seat on this valve is flubbered ?

I guess its an engine out job then if it is and pull the head..

Also I know its been discussed before..but how many turns on the tappet screws before when adjusting the new followers ? I have been told 2 turns...1.5 turns..1 turn and just so it touches......Im fryed..which one is it please ?

Sounds like the seats pulled. S.E.P in kegworth leicestershire can rework your heads for less than a set of amc replacement heads.

I would do a compression check of all cylinders before I went in with scalpel and forceps blazing. Someone may have over-enthusiastically ground in that valve.

Type 4 engines dont have the "hot number3" that the type 1 has as the oil cooler doesnt block the flow..

Could be worn seat, a poorly recut and regound seat as said.. if the compressions are good (ie even and reasonably within spec) then it could be a lot of expence for not much gain..

I would ask why are you changing the hydraulic lifters?? the odd one may fail, but not all 8, then fitting new parts against an old prob worn cam isnt going to go well generally.. I'd always recomend a cheapo mineral 20w50 in an Aircooled.. unless its really fresh and fit....

Have you checked the valve spring hasn't cracked and collapsed?
Never tried it myself but I've been told you can feed nylon rope into the spark plug hole, turn the engine by hand and use it to put pressure on the valve head. This would let you compress the spring, release the collets and check the valve stem & spring properly. But like I said I've never tried it.
A few weeks ago my van started running on three and this was the cause.

Thanks for the replies. I replaced the lifters as mine were knackered. They used to bleed down every night. I tried 15/40 oil and 20/50 oil both in Morris brands. I have put this off for 6 months or more. I just got sick of the rattle in the morning and night (I use it daily too and from work).
The engine is as quiet as a mouse now. No rattles or nothing/..so thats what the problem was.

The other question I had was the adjustment or initial setting. I have heard that 2 turns on the rocker screw is too much..I have set them with the `just touching and have a turn`. I can here one rattling a little..but it is not nothing to worry about.
I have purchased a new Webber carb (the single one..I know some people have their oppinions) but my solex carbs were seaping petrol so they had to go. I spoke to two different carb refurb companies..well known ones and they both said 7 - 9 weeks before they could even look at them..So I bit the bullet and purchased a genuine Webber from Webcon with Manifold, electric fuel pump etc. As i have come this far Im going to pull that head along with the other and have them overhauled.
Anything I should be aware of....I have done loads of Cylinder heads on normal petrol and diesel cars but never a flat 4 Aircooled, so some tips would be appreciated.

Hi,

Pulled the heads today and guess what I found on number 3 Inlet valve....Yes it had pulled the seat about 4mm. I reckon another 100 miles or so and it would have been messy.

Im sending both heads to be overhauled on wednesday. I must say I was surprised to see very very little wear on the pistons and bores..I reckon its had pistons and bores sometime ago before I had it. Either that or my 3000 mile oil change intervals paid off. I have had the van for 6 years now and have always serviced it like this.

Should run well when its back together. I would post some piccies but dont have the know how to do that..
