Should I replace the CV Joints &Gearbox mount?

Post by pocolow »

In a few weeks my local garage will be dropping the Gearbox out of my Van so I can get Aidan to do a rebuild for me. The van has done 112000 miles and as far as I can see the CV joints are original. Three of the joints appear ok (no leaks) and one is leaking slightly (inner). Should I have them replaced whilst the box is off or keep the originals(no apparent knocking/rumbling)...They're not cheap (£62 each at Brickwerks)...any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers Mark :ok

I was in the same position a couple of weeks back.
I left them be - if it ain't broke don't fix it.

Although if one is weeping/leaking I'd replace the boot and regrease.

Hmm...its the afford it which is the problem £250 for four CV joints is painful, especially when you add all the other bits likely to need replacing too

If they are originals and not got any play in them would it be worth stripping them down, giving them a good clean, check for any tell tale signs of wear and then refit them with new grease, boots etc? There's lots on here about newer CV's not being up to the original VW standards and I think Aidan himself has posted recently about using second hand originals in preference to new pattern parts. It would also be a much cheaper option if they are good on inspection. You also want to get the leaking one sorted asap or it will quickly start to wear.

Just a thought...

I got a suitably sized engine mount cheap off Ebay for around a fiver, cut it off it's mount and welded it to the bracket - job done. Obviously you need to be careful with your welding but it can be done. Only trouble is I cannot remember what vehicle the engine mount was from.
