Heater valve and front end issues, pics

Post by fairwynds »

Hi
the saga of the van continueth!
recently had new front lower panel welded in place, getting rid of the old rusty part. Had a new radiator fitted and (following advice on here) included a new heater valve. Van was back on the road for a week before springing a leak! It is the actual new valve that is faulty (I will speak with the well known supplier, in case it affects anyone else). I will source another (OEM hopefully!).

So, I have now stripped out the front, dropping the radiator to give better access to change the valve / Dinotrol paint the chassis and bodywork / clean of years of crud and grease everything up:

At the bottom of the gearstick is a sort of nylon ball and socket affair (similar to the one at the gearbox end too). If I push up on the gear lever joint from below, there is 1 - 2mm play in the ball/socket.

Anyone know if this is correct?
Should it just be packed out with grease?
Any other tips whilst I'm doing this particular job?

Your advice, as always, is appreciated... :ok

I had to replace the heater valve on my old camper. Admittedly that was about ten years ago now but my local VW commercial dealership could just order the genuine VW part for me. Worth a phone call perhaps?

They are a common fitment - Golfs and others are the same from what I remember when I bought mine.

...thats what I did in the end. The previous one I had bought, that leaked, was from VW Heritage, so will be popping it back to them.
Ian and Oldie, thanks also.... :D
