Countries are alot more relaxed about beach driving in Australasia. He was probably just having a jolly. Its good fun but can go horrible wrong, your car, your risk!
Doubt insurance would cover the loss, unless it was *stolen*!
I've driven that beach, in a SII landie, the creeks that cross it are the major obstacle, I walked one of them twice to decide on the line before attempting it and the water was absolutely freezing, but 20 miles from civilisation wasn't the place to "cock" it up, no difflocks on the landie, petol 2 1/4, not waterproofed and on my own, water came over the sills and into the pedal area - if the merc got caught in a creek it would have been swept out to sea and then returned on the next tide and battered and buried

Yeah I did it in my 1980's Hiace, well to the first creek!
Aye Aidan, definitely not a place to get caught out. The Southern Ocean is always angry and cold. Lived there for 2 years never saw it without quarter a mile of white water, see pics background!
I was also driving (or co-driving) in a very long beach... It was in 2009, while a stage in Africa Race Rally, a Pegaso 4x4 truck, was 12th Stage from Sant Louis to Dakar and speed was 110km/h during 30 minutes... one of the longest beaches I have ever seen...
Here a picture of the truck, I am in the middle...
Don't ask about the Hello Kitty sticker, It seems weird but it's a nice trick to have girls close to us...
