Re: Petrol to AFN ETDi
I just went for a blast down the A3. At 3500 RPM it gets up to 86C. It becomes cooler as engine speed is lowered. At low RPM I.E. sat in traffic it drops down to around 36C.

cheers chaps!
It was mounted where the battery should go as was 'de rigeur' a while back. Sealed in with ali plate etc and it seriously sucks a***. Being moved to somewhere slightly less 'warm'
cheers Tom

Just out of interest who told you that putting a charge cooler (air to air) behind the rear light was a good place to put it Elvis?

It was already there Jed!
i think you said (or alluded to) a few posts back (or in another thread) - its nice to see stuff evolve/develop etc and share ideas.
Just to think a few years back AAZs were the be all and end all and now you seldom see a post about them now (except lloydy whinging like a girl
Have read loads of threads/pics etc a few years back where fitting them behind the rear light was the current thing to do. It would appear from temp logs that this actually sucks ar$e big time. Currently having it sorted out. Will post pics/results after weekend
PS - an air to air charge cooler is refered to as an intercooler in common parlance

Dont even go there....................
3 weeks before buying the whitestar by accident i sold a full oettinger charge cooler set up, what a plum
Would be interested to see temps on a charge cooler v intercooler. Surely all the crazy kids that have gone tdi have had the installer give them facts/figures etc ? If i spent £kkkkks i would want to know if its running ok/safely/within acceptable parameters and not about to launch itself due to 'issues'.

Re: Petrol to AFN ETDi
I can't let this one go
Tractors have lots of torque. But not what I'd imagine makes for a "satisfying" driving experience!
HGV's have lots of torque too, but benefit from a lot (8+) of closely spaced gear ratios to keep the engine in the peak torque operating range, which is typically narrow. Efficient, but not flexible.
In a T3 you don't have the luxury of lots of ratios. Having to wazz the engine in every gear from idle to peak revs, just to bridge the yawning gulf between 4 over-stretched gears? No thanks.
I'd much rather have a moderately torquey but flexible engine, where I get the choice between short-shifting (for relaxed driving) or giving it the berries when I want to get a move on.
Driving at over 60 in one of these things is a fool's errand anyway, unless you've got your own oil well!
E D I T: This is what happens when you try and marry up a 10-year old "modern" diesel engine design with a 40-year old petrol transmission design. Compromises, compromises.
Brought to you by the Ministry of T3 spark-ignition propoganda
Like anyone's actually going to do that here in the UK? They might have on the continent in one or two pukka outfits, but try and find two conversions that are built identically over here...it's all "wing and a prayer" afaics

Torque is cheap. Untill it breaks your gearbox that is.

To re-work the old bike designer's maxim of "you can have strong, light and cheap - pick two"
How's about "pick two from economy, refinement and build cost"

Early in the morning the day after the carnage, looks like a Vietnamese village napalmed and the native villager foraging desperately trying to find any traces of his life in the smoldering ruins. Could be worse, it could be sea weed for breakfast again
