Gearbox removal

Will be cleaning it until 7th of June! Got nothing else to do is it a special grease for the drive shafts etc?

It's usually Molibdenum Disulphide aka 'Moly' or 'MO' Grease used in the CV joints, if you replace the joints (which I would assume you will be changing all 4 while it's got it's legs in the air) a small sachet of the suitable grease will be included in the kit. ... I alway use much more ... but then again I have an 18kg tub of it in the workshop here.

£6 for a pot full of CV grease at Halfords -enough to do driveshafts twice. Despite the small sachet that comes with boot kits I generally put double that amount in. As for gearbox, it may just be leaking from under CV mounts on side of gearbox (easily replaced and in the WIKI) but Aidan will probably do this if you go ahead with a semi-rebuild.

Have you ever changed or topped up gearbox oil since you've had it? I'm not suggesting that low oil is the cause but it doesn't help.

Thanks Ive got a small tub of that stashed somewhere around here! Thanks for the advice on the leak I will check it out. No the oil has never been changed since i've had it and I dont think it has ever had any kind of maintenance in its life. Poor van!

No it'll be fine. Just use the time to remove driveshafts and clean and grease them. Get the gearbox clean too - Aidan won't want to work in all that grime.

and check the crank oil seal for leaks and the clutch for contamination and get/fit a new spigot bearing anyway

remove the mount from the end case and see how bad the corrosion under that is, chip off the white oxide too it can be several mm thick and have penetrated into end case

Haha excellent! That will be me this weekend minus the stand. Could I ask what you cleaned it with? I'm assuming engine degreasant of some sort but specifics would be good never thought of spraying it! I have now

Sounds like this is the cause of my leak as i've been told there are no seals/gaskets at the front end.

I think if it were me, I'd replace the seals on output shafts, replace crankshaft and gearbox input shaft seals, and replenish the box with fresh oil and refit it - see how it goes. Not an expensive job to do. It won't be the first time a box has come back to life with a little TLC.

Plenty in WIKI on crankshaft seal and gearbox input seal as well as cleaning and repacking driveshafts. Try it certainly. If its still troublesome, consider a second hand box or get Aidan to take a look but I'd give the box a chance first. .

Incidentally, Wilko (may have been Wilkinsons) stock only one gearbox oil and its the right one for these boxes at under £4 a litre.

I resprayed my box too when it came out - matt black.

Thanks for the advice I will add it to the list of things to do. Do you know how many gaskets and seals are on the box? I would love to get my hands on a exploded view of the box.
