Transmission related/induced rattle

Post by paulo999 »

My 2l air-cooled (CU?) has developed a curious rattle.

It kicks in when the transmission is under load. No rattle when coasting, or clutch disengaged. Only with foot down, in gear.

Rattle frequency - maybe 10Hz - doesn't vary with revs. Volume varies with load.

I'm mainly curious - chances are any advice on 'inspect the grommet flange next to the flibble linkage' will go straight over my head. I understand the principles, but never done any hands on with vehicles.

Any random ideas? :)

Well, nine months later, I think it's looking like a CV joint. Diagnosis by the main man at Chiswick Car Craft, whilst they were doing my MOT.

He advised getting all 4 done - makes sense, keep it all in step - and using the Porsche ones from Brickwerks. Slight ouch at the price. :( Quoted £160+VAT to fit them. Having just read about the process of removing and refitting, I'm tempted to part with the cash for an easy life.

Man this is an expensive month! New rubber all round (long story), MOT (pass), Tax, CV joints. That's a grand. Ow!
