Hydraulic to solid lifters swap

Post by Camper236 »

Hi,

I have a 1600 air-cooled engine (CT code) that I've taken from my van. It has hydraulic lifters in it, one has lost its "paperclip" that holds it together.

Does anyone know where I can get a replacement clip, or if I can just use an internal circlip of the right size? I know you can get a new lifter for £15, seems a shame to have to spend that when the original one is fine apart from the clip.

Have been reading that the hydraulic lifters can be a pain to set and can lead to issues like burnt valves.
I have a spare CT engine that has solid lifters, but also some other issues which mean I can't just use the spare lump.
Does anyone know if I can swap the solid lifters from the spare engine to replace the hydraulic ones, or will the cams be different? (don't want to split the case). I know the pushrods are different, but I have those.

(Before you say ditch the CT engine and fit a T4 - would love too, but no one is going to give me a usable T4, and I don't have £100's to buy one, so I'm making do) ;-)

Cheers

Hello,

Fellow CT sufferer!! :rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl

I've been doing these engines for a while, and have made some videos

Here is quite a long one on the CT, with at the beginning a feature on the hydraulic tappet:

http://vimeo.com/19006035" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I see no reason why you can't use a suitable circlip.

I would avoid solid lifters, unless you are going for a big bore kit.

The CT is the cheapest and easiest to work on of the T 25's (IMHO), being the first to have all the features to improve the type 1 engine.

I get 28 mpg on the flat, 103 kph max cruising speed, max speed 115 kph ( by GPS), and unfortunately only 75 kph max in 3rd up hills

I've removed all the hall electronics, and back to a SVDA distributor, set at 8deg before TDC,

Just did a long European holiday, never even lifted the engine lid, just checked the oil daily

Keep CTing

Cordialement,

:ok
