Thanks for the link - I read it carefully and considering the points made in it, I'm going to assume they've fitted solid lifters - well I'll adjust them as if they're solid and see if there's any change. I must also measure the length of stroke to see if I've got a 1.9 or 2.1..

if the engine is running with 1.25 turns on the tappets, then they really should be hydraulics as I wouldnt expect the engine to run with the valves slightly open... it would be back firing and puffing and snorting like a goodun at best......

a low compression could easily indicate a valve not closing fully..

You can adjust to zero clearance and preload to do a compression test...
Then use 0.5 turn preload... cold.....

Timing... as said.. if you dont know what it is, 5deg BTDC should be used on 95UL.. if you find out its a 1.9 then a little more advance is better... (vac dissconected from dizzy)

Check dizzy mech advance is working smooth as is the vac advance unit...
