Bespoke Exhausts

Hi Guys

we went to a local firm today to see about them doing us an exhaust and to be honest their quote wasnt bad - better than i thought and we know they are good as have used them before for a stainless one on a car, however, they asked us if there was any other way to do it other than the standard way so it would be cheaper..................so i wondered if there was anyone on here who had any piccys of their exhausts that we could show them as an idea??

we have a 1983 A reg hi-top which normally have the early exahusts on but ours has the later exhaust fitted if that makes a difference to what can be fitted.

if not we will just go with the standard one...thanks in advance

Can they custom build a full system for cheaper than the Speedshop ones?

havent looked at speedshop ones but they can build one for no more than 500 quid fitted but they said if there was an example of an simpler system that works then they could do it a lot cheaper! so just wondered what other people had

Have you considered brickwerks? They sell and exact replica of the late style exhaust in stainless steel (all except the cast knuckle). If it's only one pipe you need you can just change that part. The beauty of this is you can gradually change to stainless as your buget allows.

Has the exhaust place you mentioned had any prior experience with the T3 exhaust and the pitfalls and woes of broken exhaust studs etc?

I've recently got a speedshop exhaust and although I didn't fit it (got it fitted at the same time as the recon engine - beans on toast for a while) it looks dead simple. Lovely sound, good quality.

£500 custom built & fitted though sounds like a bargain.

It's certainly easy fitting one in a nicely reconditioned engine than the stud snapping rusty thing in my van!

yeh thats the one we have with the saddles and straps etc, we looked at brickwerks but the only problem is that we dont really have the tools to fit it ourselves if anything goes wrong and if we bought it and got someone else to fit it then it works out really expensive compared to them making us one and fitting it.....they have done one on a T2 but not a T25 oh and its the whole thing that needs replacing its all rotten!! we have got the money to do it as we knew it needed it when we boought it but was just looking for other design options - prob arent any!! thanks

I had a full stainless steel exhaust system with a lifetime guarantee fitted by JP EXHAUSTS and had a nice day out in Macclesfield while it was being fitted. Top people who really care about T25's and customer satisfaction. Slightly more than £500, but well worth every penny. I cannot recommend them highly enough.

I have just had my rotten mild steel frankenstein exhaust removed and a new Stainless exhaust built and fitted. The exhaust is now quite a bit longer which has resulted in a noticeable increase in low and mid range torque. I should hopefully see see mpg improvements. Certainly you don't need to press as hard on the go pedal to get it shifting.

Originally it was going to be 2 12" long 5" mufflers along the back and one more in line off the downpipes at the side but space was an issue so instead the 3 mufflers have been welded together and placed along the back.

This isn't for a stock engine but shows what can be done with a little creativity.

OK, new exhaust time for me now

Normally I would do it myself but this time, at this time of year and with no "under cover" place to do it I reckon it will have to "go in", especially as I don't want roadside hassle with broken studs etc. (I will PlusGas them all for a few days before taking it in.) I was going to order a standard Brickwerks stainless system and let my local garage (who are very good) do it, but then I remembered reading on here about Jpexhausts in Macclesfield who are apparently T25 experienced and I found this thread.

I wonder if their system the same as the standard stainless system as supplied by Brickwerks etc ?

VW Speedshop - all the way. Lovely system. I have posted before about these (do a search) and included some 'things to do' before you change your exhaust system....ie: tune the van / replace worn out engine mounts.... in order to prevent undue shaking of your lovely new zorst

I've had a JP system on for over 2 years and it's been fine. Nothing broken yet.

I've heard a few vwspeedshop owners complain about mountings breaking

Here is a link to their system for our vans = Click here - trouble is I don't fancy doing it myself because of "doing it on my back in the road" and the potential for problems with studs
