So, after some investigation, found that number 31 on this diagram had come off:

So, I put it back on, and the gears were perfect, no slop, all where they should be, very positive gearshift for a short while before, again, the gears went all to "cock" and, sure enough, the ring had come off again.
I ordered a new one, since the old one looked a bit battered and figured it was just worn. Fitted that with some grease, and the gears were even more spot on perfect, I was veeery pleased. the ring was tight on the guide, and very snug inside the shift rod.
Missus used the van to get to work and back, she got home to tell me the gears were all funny again. Look under the van, and, sure enough, AGAIN that ring has come off.
Now, the little guide rod is very, very slightly bent, only perceptible when you are tightening it up and you can see it is slightly off centre. Certainly I couldn't bend it any straighter than it is. So, what else could cause this little bugger to slip off the guide rod? Is it the slight bend that's causing it? is there somewhere else to look? I'm starting to get a bit fed up of crawling round under the van now

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
