Please heklp me with my gearshift woes!

Post by fall-apart-dave »

Right, I have an issue with my gears. I can get third and 4th, 1st is where reverse should be and second is below where reverse should be. Can't get reverse at all. the gears feel sloppy as hell.

So, after some investigation, found that number 31 on this diagram had come off:

So, I put it back on, and the gears were perfect, no slop, all where they should be, very positive gearshift for a short while before, again, the gears went all to "cock" and, sure enough, the ring had come off again.

I ordered a new one, since the old one looked a bit battered and figured it was just worn. Fitted that with some grease, and the gears were even more spot on perfect, I was veeery pleased. the ring was tight on the guide, and very snug inside the shift rod.

Missus used the van to get to work and back, she got home to tell me the gears were all funny again. Look under the van, and, sure enough, AGAIN that ring has come off.

Now, the little guide rod is very, very slightly bent, only perceptible when you are tightening it up and you can see it is slightly off centre. Certainly I couldn't bend it any straighter than it is. So, what else could cause this little bugger to slip off the guide rod? Is it the slight bend that's causing it? is there somewhere else to look? I'm starting to get a bit fed up of crawling round under the van now

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance! :)

PS

The van is (or was!) an air cooled 1600CT model. Different engine now but same cogbox.

Further investigation revealed that the guide rod onto which "31" attaches has a plastic bush on the end to seat the ring. This bush is badly worn. Where do I find a replacement?

Is this what you are looking for

The same happened to mine. I didn't disconnect it when i dropped the engine and it bent the rod slightly. Straightened it out in a vice and put the guide ring on and it was spot on afterwards.

No, it's the plastic seat that the ring you linked me to sits in, that is badly worn and the ring just slips off all the time. Thanks though dude.

Sorry, miss-read, mine had worn on one side and couldn't find one so I ended building the round and grove again using an o-ring and strong glue. It's stayed in place for over a year now

Well, I used a screwdriver heated to cherry red to melt and "build up" the wall, will see how it holds this time. I tried contact adhesive but it just doesn't bond to the plastic. If my current, er, "bodge" fails, I shall try making something.

Well that bodge was short lived. Still falls off. :( Bugger.
