I'm planning an engine swap.....my tired DG (1.9 Petrol) for a hopefully better DG. My Exhaust is in poor shape tho...

Not sure if I can swap exhaust over, use some, or if I need to buy a new system - but they're expensive..From my searching, getting all the separates from somewhere like Just Kampers could cost almost as much as a full system in stainless steel, £500 plus! Scary stuff...

Any advice regarding stainless systems over normal ones, good exhaust suppliers much appreciated... :shock:

There are no bargains unless you go for mild steel, then expect to be doing it again. Or wait til someones gatting rid of a stainless exhaust, but you could be waiting some time. JP performance and brickwerks systems seem to be gatting most thumbs ups at the moment.

I've just had the Brickwerks SS system fitted, it cost around £620.00 with club discount. Trouble is the potential for snapping studs and possible 'engine out' senario to drill and retap....
Expect to pay anything from 5hours to 2days labour for fitting whatever you buy.......and at £45.00 an hour average that could be £225.00 ------------£720.00 eeeeek! on top of the cost of the exhaust itself.
Time to get a fixed quote me thinks....
Or fit it yourself...but be prepared.

Blimey!

It looks like the exhaust will cost loads more than my replacement engine!....That doesn't sound right, they're only metal pipes! :?

I think I'll see what is salvageable from my current exhaust, maybe with a big pot of gungum.................If a replcement is needed I think I'd go for stainless steel......

Sadly it's a bullet that has to be bitten AND you're much better doing it with the engine on a bench than once it's back in and then having to mess again a few months later. Do it properly and do it the once.

Fair Point Ian, problem is that when I get the engine swapped over, the replacement has no exhaust....A company in Leeds (http://www.tonybanks.co.uk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) have an all in price including fitting, but I'd have to get the van there...Alternative is buy a set (Just Kampers or JP maybe ) & get my Garage to fit it, or me? ...or transfer the one from my current engine for now...

Yep, full stainless system is the way to go (why is the mild steel set so expensive?). But added to the cost of the engine & labour, and the odd surprise along the way, this van could finish me off!! :roll:

If you are trying to keep the price down but still do the job properly then I guess you could buy the stainless steel headers (the pipes that connect to the cylinder heads) but the rest in mild steel......the Brickwerks system follows VW pattern so can be mixed/matched.

Interesting alternative there CovKid - It's a much nicer price! ...If it's possible on mine I'm interested...

I've bought a C Reg 1.9 DG engine to replace my tired B Reg DG - same engine but the cooling pipework on these 2 engines is very different (sounds like a new topic) - I wanted to connect the present coolant pipes to the new engine as they're in good nick...fingers crossed...

Early and late cooling systems, try a search and there's LOADS of info.

Thanks Ian,
The diagrams point to my current engine (from B Reg DG) having the late set-up & the replacement (out of a C Reg) having the early set up?? Odd! I might be wrong, the engines aren't in front of me & the diagrams have a lot going on!

I'll have a read, but do you think I can fit both systems on both engines? The long coolant pipes under my van look nice and fairly new.....

If the late system is in and working KEEP THAT ! swap the waterpump over and everything from the late system.

Thanks Ian, I started a new topic about this as it veered off from exhausts, but you've answered my question...It's not me doing the work, not got a garage or the skills I'm afraid! :cry:

I hope the garage aren't foxed by having to remove coolant pipes & connect to the system in my camper, & maybe use my current carb (as it has new carb kit)....Basically using the best from 2 engines to make one good 'un!! :ok
